The above connection between Ebenezer Sr., and this Ebenezer is not proven, as I have not run across a birth date or place of the soldier Ebenezer. Fredin asserts that this is probably the same person, and it would make sense. Of all the Mott families and genealogies I have looked at, none contain the family name of Ebenezer as does this one.

New York: State Census of Albany Towns in 1790, comp. by Kenneth Scott (Gen.Pub., Baltimore, 1975) lists as a resident of Stephentown, Albany Co. Mott..... (Mott, Ebenezer) (p. 51) The first listing is the State Census, the second the Federal census - a check of this name can be made for the entire listing at the New York State Library or the New York Historical Society. Stephentown is in S.E. Rensselaer County near the Massachusetts border, however, Rensselaer Co was made from Albany Co. after the 1790 Census.

There were two Ebenezer Motts on the 1790 Census, one in Dutchess County, the other in Stephentown, NY. There is no way of knowing which is which but the Mott in Dutchess County was holding one slave. Considering Ebenezer's upbringing as a Quaker it would seem that Ebenezer in Stephentown is the brother of John Mott. See the census entry for 1790 in Stephentown that the family consists of 5 males over 16. The family in Dutchess County has 3 males under 16. This would indicate that the Ebenezer in Dutchess County was much younger than the one in Stephentown. More confusion is created with the pension records and family which was in Dutchess County in 1840.

Stephentown is located about an hour south of Pittstown where John is supposedly located in 1790. In the 1810 census of Petersburg, NY Ebenezer appears 6 lines above John Mott.

There is also an Ebenezer Mott and Ebenezer Mott, Jr on the 1800 census of Exeter, Luzerne Co., PA. There are a goodly number of Motts buried in that county per FaG but no Ebenezer.Does not show in a FS search but does in Ancestry.

8 children; soldier died Jan 1813, wid died. 2 Dec.. 1840 in Dutchess Co., NY leaving children: Jacob E., James and John, Anne wid of John Vanderburgh, Maria Mott since deceased, Catherine and Ebenzer over age 21, Son James made affidavid in 1855 in Dutchess Co., NY.

Military: Mott, Ebenzer (NY) 2d Lieut. of Graham's Reg. of NY Militia, Sept to Nov. 1776; 2d Lieut 5th NY, 21 Nov 1776; taken prisoner at Ft. Montgomery 6th Oct 1777; 1st Lieut. 22 Dec. 1779; retired 1 Jan 1781; served subsequently as Lieut. NY Levies. p403

There is also a 2nd Lt V New York Regiment, Lewis DuBois Colonel (List of Officers of the Army of the US from 1779 to 1900 (1900, Hamersly & Company, 863 pages. ) Page 14. (questionable source)

Possibly moved to Luzerne County, PA per the 1800 census. Lots of Cemetery records in that county not online: see https://www.accessgenealogy.com/cemetery/luzerne-county-pennsylvania-cemetery-records.htm
Exeter and Pittstown are north of Wilkes-Barre and the site of the Wyoming Massacre although that appears to be irrelevant.

Fredin asserts that this was probably the resident of Charlotte Precinct (now Hyde Park), Dutchess Co., NY when he enlisted in the Revolutionary War in 1776. p209.

This is the questionable assertion that this Ebenezer was from NJ and the son. There are three Ebenezer Motts on the NY rosters (New York (State). Comptroller's Office. Title:New York in the Revolution as colony and state / a compilation of documents and records from the Office of the State comptroller., Albany, N.Y., JB Lyon Co., 1901-04):

• Disowned: Burlington and Rancocas MM, 4 Apr 1763, Burlington County, NJ. ⁴⁶⁶

• Named in will: son of Ebenezer, 3 Dec 1770. ⁴⁰² the bequest of five pounds to be paid two months following the death of his mother Sarah would indicate a level of estrangement between Ebenezer Sr and Ebenezer Junior.

• Military: Militia (Land Bounty Rights) - Albany County 6th Regiment, 1777, Albany County, NY. See the notes, but I believe this is John's brother based on later census records.

• Census, 1810, Petersburg, Rensselaer Co., NY. This may be Ebenezer III though: 3 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male over 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female over 45.
If Ebenezer II was born in 1744 he would have been 66 in 1810 which seems a bit old for this family but then John also had a late family, his youngest being born when he was 69 (Mary Alma in 1813.)
