General Notes:
Family record copied from fly leaf on the original Bible of Jonathan DuBois in possession of Earl Ham, Shiocton, WI, March 16, 1938 by Mayhew or H. Elizabeth Mott. This record was subsequently filed with the Dubois Family Association, New Paltz, NY. There is no direct indication of the mother(s) of his children on the information copied from the family bible in 1938.
Cemetery with deathdate Information: Card on file at the Ballston Spa Public Library
This record contains some confusing and perhaps inaccurate information. See the Remarks below.
Jonathan DuBois and his wife Elizabeth are key figures in this lineage also, for information with the DuBois Family Association is evidently in error. Examination of the baptism records existant as well as a letter I have from 'Aunt Sally Dye' (Jonathan's youngest sister) written in 1867 which spells out the family lineage make it clear that this family is correct.
Jonathan may or may not have married a Catharine Ham first, but it is pretty clear that his children were by his wife Elizabeth given the birth and christening records of Peggy and Charity in the East Greenbush Reformed Dutch Church. Heidgerd is the source of the first wife, Catherine Ham being the mother of the first four children.
I also have original letters from them to their daughter Charity written towards the end of their lives.
As a young boy of about 12 he moved with his family from Fishkill to Schodack, New York and then as an adult to Ballston Spa where he died. His gravestone is in the Rock City cemetery in Milton township.
Research Notes:
The confusion over the wives of Jonathan DuBois comes from: 1. The entries in the membership list of the East Greenbush DRC which show a Catharine, d/o Conrad and Christina Streit Ham to be the wife of Jonathan DuBois in 1799. (September 28, 1799: "Conradt Ham, c., and wife Christina Stryd, c., and their daughter Catharina Ham c., wife of Jonathan Dubois," - see source)
2. The entries in the Jonathan DuBois Bible passed to the DuBois Family Association which show her deathdate as 1810. 3. The baptism records of Margaret (1802) and Charity (1804) indicating that their parents were Jonathan and Elizabeth DuBois. 4. The records of the DuBois Family Association which, drawing on the deathdate of 1810, attribute the parentage of Jonathan's first four children to Catharine..
Even if the deathdate from the "DuBois Bible" were in error, perhaps misread as 1800 or 1801, this wouldn't explain why Catharine Ham appeared on her father's will in 1806. In all of her material on the Ham's and DuBois, 'Aunt Libbie' makes no mention of Catharine, her recollections indicating that all of Jonathan DuBois' children were by Elizabeth. 588
