Data on Anna Sorenson is from an undated, typewritten biography found among Harriet Elizabeth Mott's (son-in-law's sister) papers. This biography looks like a transcribed obituary that appeared in the local newspaper.

Died at her home, 234 Short St., Neenah, Wisconsin

Member of the Danish Baptish church in Neenah which merged with the Whiting Memorial Baptist church.

Not in the biography, but from notes in a scrapbook in the possession of her granddaughter Marion Wauda:

On the trip from Denmark to the America with her new husband she was seasick for the entire 5 week voyage, at times near death. She was so sick that from that time on she never wanted to get in a boat again.

Anna was four years older than her husband, and no doubt his sweetheart when he went to make his fame and fortune in America in 1873 at the age of 19. She evidently waited for him for 6 or 7 years until he returned in 1880 to claim her for his bride and take her back to America. The story is that her ocean voyage to America as a new bride made her so seasick that she never got in a boat again the rest of her life.

Once in America she bore five children, one daughter dying at the age of 7 in 1890, another unmarried at the age of 26 in 1919, and her daughter Emma Mott died at 32, leaving her four grandchildren. Only one son, Martin, was alive at the time she died. The other, Edwin, having moved to Riverside, California, died leaving three children.

In her later life on Short Street in Neenah, she would look forward to the Sunday afternoon visits of her son-in-law, Mayhew Mott, who would exercise his brood of children with the walk to grandmother's house. ⁵¹⁶

Her obituary in the Appleton paper says she was survived by a brother Oscar Smith of Shelton, CT.

On the 1881 passenger list she is "Anna Madsine Holm" as best as I can read the middle name. She is grouped below her husband who is below "Osker Sorensen" a 17 year old farmer heading for New York. Further down the page (5 lines) is "Lonnie Sorensen," 17, female going to Wisconsin. Just below her is "? Hannent Sorensen" (given name ?), 18, female going to Wisconsin.

From above this is unlikely: Possibly Oscar Christian Frederik Sorensen who at age 25 emigrated to Rochester, MN, 19 Mar 1875. Ship Indirekte.

Changed his name.
Very little in the papers: 20 Sep 1926 Bridgeport Telegram says Oscar Smith, mail carrier on Route 7, Shelton, is on vacation.

Ane married Christian Madsen Holm, son of Mads Peter Christensen Holm and Anne Johanne Nielsdatter, 9 Mar 1881 in Frederikhavn, Denmark. (Christian Madsen Holm was born 6 May 1854 in Mosbjerg, Hjørring County, Denmark,⁵⁰⁷ died 30 Jun 1942 in Kaukauna, WI ⁵⁰⁷ and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Neenah, Winnebago Co., WI.)

• residence: 234 Short St.: Neenah, Winnebago Co., WI. Short Street is now Linden Ct. stubbing off of Doty Av. south of Riverside Park. It is identified as such on a 1909 map, but an earlier map (1878 - David Rumsey Collection) shows it as 3rd St. All the older homes have been demolished and replaced on Linden Ct.

  Marriage Notes:

Not found in any church records because they were married by Judge Erickson in Frederikshavn since Chris was a Lutheran and Anna a Baptist. In the marriage certificate document Neils C. Holm and Soren Oleson attested to Chris' good character.
