Birth and deathdates from tombstone in the Fishkill Churchyard.

Not much is known about Ariaantje Oosterhout, but she was evidently descended from a prominent Dutch family. One indication is that she is descended from Anneke Jans Bogardus, who was the wife of Pastor Evarardus Bogardus, the 2nd pastor of the church in New Amsterdam, now New York City. One note I have says that Anneke was 'owner of 60 acres in the business portion of NYC'. This might help explain some references in letters written in the 1860's by her grandaughter Sarah DuBois Dye - "Aunt Sally" - to men who were agents trying to contact heirs in the family to sign releases to that land that had been leased. The land in question was in Lower Manhatten and by the 1860's was worth a lot of money. Further research is needed here, for sure. 528

bullet  Research Notes:

An exegesis of two letters written in1867 that are in my possession further confirm this lineage in my family. Evidently, in the winter of 1866-67 my Great grandmother got interested in her lineage and wrote to a Great Aunt (Aunt Sally Dye) and to an Aunt (Margaret Ham) requesting information. 'Aunt Sally Dye' was the youngest daughter of Arianntje's son Cornelius DuBois. Margaret DuBois Ham was the daughter of Cornelius' son Jonathan, 'Aunt Sally's' brother.

One: Dated March 23, 1867 from Aunt 'Sally' Dye(granddaughter of Jonathan and Ariaantie Oosterhout DuBois): On a separate piece of paper she writes out, 'bible style', the birth and deathdates for the family: her siblings, her parents and grandparents. In the body of the letter she writes: " I will write you on my fashon (sic) as far as I know my Granmother (sic) Dubois parents. I only remember their names. It was Peter and Helche Osterhout." "Grandmother Dubois" would have been Arianntje Oosterhout Du Bois, whose parents were Peter Jans Oosterhout and Heyltjen Schut Oosterhout.

Two: Dated April 11, 1867, Margaret Ham writes out the same information, 'bible style', evidently having gotten the same from 'Aunt Sally', for it is in the same form and sequence. In the body of the letter she writes: "Johnathan (sic) Dubois and Adrietta Osterhout was my Great Grandfather and Grandmother." Margaret defers to 'Aunt Sally' for the infomation, writing "Pleas pardon all I hav writen before that was wrong."(sic)
