bullet  General Notes:

The Burhans Genealogy says that Jan arrived in America on April 16, 1663 aboard the ship Bonte Koe (Spotted Cow), evidently with a brother Barent Burhans, although other records show that the ship sailed from Amsterdam on that date with Jan Bergen captain. Colonial Manuscripts in Albany show a debt for Barent Burhans of 39 florins for passage and board on the Bonte Koe arriving 16 April 1663. The account was never settled and his name never appears on any records suggesting that he died in route or shortly after. Jan Burhans paid his account for passage on the Bonte Koe 17 October 1663.

His first appearance in the Colonial documents is when he was admitted member of Ref. Dutch Church at Wiltwyck (Kingston, NY) as Jan Jacob Burhans on the third of July, 1664. The witnesses were Jacob Burhans, his father, and Roeloff Swartwout.

Appears numerous time in the Kingston Court records, and Kingston Church Records until 1708, about which time he must have died, as his son Barent executed a Bond to his brothers and sisters in relation to their father's estate bearing the date October 30, 1708 and attested January 22, 1708. The tax list for 1709 values the estate of Jan Burhans at £130. During his lifetime he was an Elder of the church in Kingston as well as a Magistrate. There is no known burial place for him, although he, his father and others of the family may have been buried in the now defunct Houghtaling Cemetery in Kingston. Supposedly the graves in that cemetery, possibly containing several hundred graves, were moved to the Old Dutch Churchyard, although this is doubtful. 529,530,531
