Came to America as a child with his widowed mother and his siblings in 1661. Founded the most numerous branch of the family. Sometime between 1694 and 1697 he moved his family from Albany to New York City quickly settled in Bergen County in Northern New Jersey. From there the family spread into Morris and Essex counties of New Jersey, with one branch of the family returning to upstate New York about the time of the Revolution. His first six children were baptized in Albany, NY and the last three were baptized in Bergen, New Jersey.1683: listed as a member of the Dutch Church at Albany, NY.; 14 Oct 1693: Constable of Albany; 1694: listed as in arrears for his taxes in Albany; 1694: sues for payment for shoes delivered in Albany; 3 March 1697: listed as members of the New York Dutch Church; 22 May 1697: residing in Bergen county, NJ.
Jan's occupation is not clear but he may have been involved with transportation and delivery of goods and merchandise, possibly working with his brother Cornelis who was an official carman of Albany and owner of a sloop transporting goods between Albany and New York. Jan had connections with other men involved in river transport. He sues for non-payment of a delivery of shoes in 1684 and some researchers have argued that this may indicate that he was a shoemaker. 699,984
