General Notes:
Some researchers have listed this person as Shuah/Jerusha Gilman. That is simply not true. Nowhere is she listed with the name Jerusha. The name Shuah was an uncommon biblical name in itself and was NOT a derivative of Jerusha. There is no proof that Abner's wife was named Shuah Gilman, but the circumstantial evidence I feel is considerably sound. Moses Gilman of Exeter, New Hampshire names "Shuah Thustin" as a daughter in his will of 1741. Abner Thurston's oldest child is named Moses Thurston (probably in honor of the maternal grandfather). To add to this, three different granddaughters were named Shuah and a grandson was named Gilman. Abner Thurston moved to Exeter at the right time to marry Shuah Thurston, who was from that town. If she did not marry Abner Thurston, there is not many other possible Thurstons for her to have married, especially considering the recurring names in Abner's descendants.
Four occurances of "Shuah" in the Bible: (Shuah, sixth son of Abraham and Ketura, Gen. xxv.2; Shuah, daughter of Heber, of the tribe of Asher, 1 Chron. vii.32; Shuah, daughter of Hirah the Adullamite, and wife of Judah, son of Jacob, Gen. xxxviii.2; Shuah, brother of Caleb, 1 Chron.iv.11. (The Bible Cyclopedia, Lawson, 1850)) 307
Research Notes:
Google Books has a history of the Gilman family: Search Gilman Family or use http://tinyurl.com/6e6use
Shuah married Abner Thurston, son of James Thurston and Mary Pearson, circa 1720. (Abner Thurston was born 28 Feb 1698/99 in Newbury, Essex, Mass. and died 1 Dec 1775 in Exeter, Rockingham Co., NH 230.)
Marriage Notes:
Shuah, or Jerusha, Gilman, daughter of Moses Gilman of Exeter, New Hampshire, is often named as the wife of Abner. So far the closest I've found to a source is from Vol 2 of Savage:
MOSES, S. of the preced. prob. eldest, had two ws. Ann, and Elizabeth neither of wh. have kn. surnames, had ch. (nam. in his will, made 4 Apr. 1741, pro. 28 Oct. 1746), Moses, Abigail, Ann, Judith, Shuah, and Elizabeth.
This will, found in the Ancestry.com New Hampshire Probate Records, names the children's last names: "Abigail Lord, Anne Longee, Judith Smith, Shuah Thustin and Elizabeth Thustin." There is no concrete evidence of the marriage. Abner's son Moses named his third child Shuah. 235,236
