Medad Porter Sr.
- Marriage (1): Mary Davis
- Died: 1802-1812
FamilySearch ID: GW6Z-8F1.
General Notes:
According to the Mott biography of his son, Medad Porter senior written by his granddaughter Elizabeth Porter, was a cooper and died when Medad Jr. was a young boy. Mott family records inform that Medad, Jr. was born in Waterford, NY. Waterford is about three miles south of Half Moon where the Mohawk river flows into the Hudson.
1800: Several Porter families appear on the Halfmoon, Saratoga Co. 1800 census including Medad Porter with one male >10, one male 16-26, one female 16-26. This is likely Medad Senior. He appears on the line below Amos Porter: 1 male >10, 1 male <45, 3 females >10, 2 females 10-16 and one female 26-45. Amos is two lines below Jeremiah Porter: 1 male >10, one male 16-26, one female 16-26.
1790: Very possible that Amos Porter was the father of both Medad and Jeremiah who had started families of their own. Amos Porter appears in 1790 Halfmoon census: 2 males under 16, 1 male over 16; 3 females. There is also a Nathaniel Porter in Half Moon: 5 males under 16, 2 males over 16, 3 females.
It is also possible that, given that Medad senior named his firstborn Asahel that his father, or more likely his brother, was the Major Asahel Porter who died in April of 1824 age 53 and is buried in Greenfield Center aka Saint John's Cemetery in Saratoga County. Wife Clarinda died age 40 in 1819. (newyorkgravestones.org). That Asahel was born in 1771: Medad senior would have been born at least by 1780 to have had a son born in 1802, so it is more likely that that Asahel (d.1824) was a brother.
Nothing further is known of the Porter line, but there are several Porter families that go back to the Puritans, and some day I may be able to tie these in. His burial place or gravestone are not known. 548

My interest was piqued since my Great Grandmother is Orilla Lavinia Porter a daughter of Frank Porter whose family is supposed to have come to California by covered wagon from "back east" (which doesn't mean NY necessarily). The family had to arrive in time to have Orilla here (if born in CA?) in approximately 1880-1890.
Medad married Mary Davis. (Mary Davis died in 1802-1812.)
