Mayor John Henning 1804
FamilySearch ID: G83C-LJD.
General Notes:
of Poxwell House, Dorset. Mayor of Dorchester, 1570 married Jane. Poxwell was a possession of Cerne Abbey and granted to Thomas Howard of Lulworth upon it's dissolution by Queen Elizabeth I. Howard sold the property to John Hemming, a merchant of Poole, who built the Manor House about 1600. The manor remained the seat of the Hemming family for that century, finally passing to the Trenchard family with the marriage of his 3rd Great-Grandaughter Elizabeth who married Thomas Trenchard in 1695.
The above, and the lineage between John and Elizabeth, was gleaned from Burke's Family Record and is somewhat suspicious in the number of generations between them although lives were short. John Hemming > John (Dorothy Wareham) > Richard (Jane Smith) > Edmond (Johan Henley) > Henry (Ursula Achim) > Elizabeth (Thomas Trenchard).
One such early Mayor was John Henning a merchant of Poole who according to 'Burk's Family Records' was Mayor of Dorchester in 1570. In the middle ages Poxwell or Pokewell was a manor in the possession of Cerne Abbey situated just 6 miles south east of Dorchester not far from the the coast. Following the Abbey's disolution it was granted by Queen Elizabeth I to Thomas Howard of Lulworth and Bindon. He sold it to John Henning a merchant of Poole in 1575 and John built the house we know today about 1613. (Website: Mayors of Dorchester 1629-2010) 1804,1810
