Landmark Bridge Gone

In 2001 the old South Shore truss bridge in Miller was replaced by a plate girder bridge. The old bridge was removed and cut up for scrap. I always considered it a landmark for the town of Miller Beach, sitting high and visible. Here's an old picture of the bridge taken probably sometime in the 1920's from the roof of Miller School looking east down 6th Place.

The old South Shore bridge sits forlornly on the ground hours before the new bridge at its side is scheduled to be craned into position. The old bridge, long a landmark, was craned off of its moorings on Friday, November 9th, as part of a 5 bridge modernization project on the South Shore. All South Shore traffic east of Miller was halted for the weekend.

The new bridge craned into place late in the afternoon of Saturday, November 10, 2001:
