At the time of his father's will in 1854 he was supposedly visiting in America.

Possible child from William's first marriage?

Is mentioned in his father's will in 1854 as ".... my son James Pitt at present supposed to be residing in some part of America ....."

There is a James Pitt, age 50, on the 1855 NY State census of Angelica, Allegany that were transcribed. Same place, age 64 in the 1870 census. Ages vary by plus/minus two or three years in the censuses but he appears in the same place from 1855 to 1870, insane in the poor house.

There is a James Pitt, born in England, widower and insane pauper listed in the censuses of the Poor House of Allegany County, New York. http://sites.rootsweb.com/~nyallega/ph1880.html

He is listed as 52 years old on the Federal Census. He also appears in the 1870 census of that Poor House as well as the Federal Census. There is a census and history of the Poor House on the Allegany County, NY GenWeb website:
