John Collins was one of six persons to purchase 3000 acres if land on May 22, 1710 in what is now the northeastern part of the town of Hopkinton, RI. He was a Quaker.
Born William, but after the death of his father in 1679 he was renamed John by his mother. He was thenafter known as John. His father had named his firstborn son John. That John died in infancy. He named a later son John. This John died in the shipwreak with is father, motivating his mother to rename William. William was born the same year his father and older brother died at sea.
