Henry Dunham

  General Notes:

Henry appears to have been orphaned as a child and his whereabouts during the 1780's and 1790's are questionable. He is absent from the 1793 Woodbridge, New Jersey militia census when he would have been of the right age to be included. His older sister and possibly other relatives moved to Pennsylvania in the late 1780's before going on to what is now West Virginia. In the 1790 census in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, there is two unidentified males over 16 in the family of Henry's sister Eunice. One of them may have been Henry. In the mid 1790's, Henry married a woman named Sarah Ellison, who was probably a native of New York City. They settled at his hometown of Woodbridge, New Jersey. There, Henry was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a sexton.

Sometime between 1814 and 1820 (probably in about 1816), Henry moved with his family out west to Union County, Indiana. They settled in a part of Union County that became Wayne County in 1821. Apparently, the family lived in Wayne Township, at the edge of Center Township, just east of the village of Centerville.

The History of Wayne County ( https://archive.org/details/historyofwayneco00inyoun/page/370/mode/2up?q=Dunham )
says, on page 370: "Henry Dunham, from Ohio, came about the year 1822 or 1823, and carried on the tailoring business a number of years, and died."

"Only thing of interest is that our Henry and Sarah Dunham appear to have lived in New York City briefly before moving to Indiana. They sold their land in Woodbridge NJ in September 1818. Then in the 1819 New York City "Jury Census", there is a Henry Dunham, Taylor, at #8 Leonard Street. This was adjacent to "Widow White", who I'm assuming was Sarah's aunt Rachel Ellison White, mentioned as an heir of John Ellison." Email from Ryan 12/1/2021 ⁹³⁸

There is a Henry Dunham who fought in the War of 1812:
1 REG'T (METCALFE'S) W. TENNESSEE MILITIA. (Historic Records CD - War of 1812 database). Henry would have been 40 years old in 1813.

Middlesex County Deeds, Vol. 4, Pg. 200:
On April 10, 1801, Clarkson Edgar and his wife [Sally] and William Edgar and his wife Phebe of Woodbridge, NJ deeded land to Henry Dunham of Woodbridge, New Jersey for $345.75. This was 2.26 acres of land in the town of Woodbridge. Signed by Clarkson Edgar, William Edgar, Phebe Edgar and Sally Edgar. Witnessed by Ichabod Potter and Jonathan Hagar[?].

Middlesex County Deeds, Vol. 13, Pg. 319:
On September 1, 1818, Henry Dunham and Sally his wife, of Township of Woodbridge, County of Middlesex, State of New Jersey deeded land to Martha Campbell of the same place for $1,100. This was land in the Township of Woodbridge, on the south side of Woodbridge Turnpike, containing just over 4 acres. Signed by Henry Dunham and Sarah Dunham. Witnessed by Sam'l Edgar and Ichabod Potter.

Henry married Sarah Ellison, daughter of Johannes "John" Ellison Junior and Unknown, in 1796 in Woodbridge, Middlesex Co., New Jersey.¹¹⁶⁸ (Sarah Ellison was born 8 Dec 1777 in New York ^850,1172 and died 19 Aug 1864 in Centerville, Wayne Co., Indiana ¹¹⁷³.)
