bullet  General Notes:

A George Spicer was a witness at the marriage of James Spicer and Sarah Pitt.

1841 Census shows him at Southover, Tolpuddle, same abode/profession as on Henry's birth certificate. (Was he a dairyman at Southover alongside his brother James?)

Nigel's Notes:

Possibly married Ann Samways, Dorchester RD, Q2 1839. (There are several families of Samways in Broadmayne on 1851 census).

Possible death in Q1 1874 in Stepney RD aged 55.

1841 Census at Southover: George (22, dairyman), Ann (21), Susannah (1).

Did George takeover at Southover as dairyman from his elder brother James when he (James) moved to farm at Corsley, Wiltshire?

1851 Census at Turnerspuddle: George (32, born West Stafford), Ann (33, born Broadmayne), Samuel (11, born Broadmayne), Sarah (9, born Southover), George (5, born Southover).

1861 Census at Tolpuddle: George (42, head, mar, miller, b. Stafford), Ann (42, wife, b. Broadmayne), Sarah (18, dau, b. Southover), James (3, son, b. Tolpuddle). Also Sam Samways Spicer (21, head, mar, miller, b. Broadmayne), Eliza (30, wife, b. Harborne, Staffordshire). Sam Samways Spicer may be son of George Spicer.

1871 census at 45 Ordell Road (?), St Mary, Stratford le Bow, London: George (51, head, M, Cheesemonger, b. Stafford), Ann (52, wife, b. BroadMayne), James (13, son, b. Tolpuddle). [RG 10/576/

1881 census at Bovington, Wool: Samuel Day (36, head, mar, Ag Lab, b. Fordington), Maria O (31, wife, b. Tolpuddle), 6 children, George Spicer (64, widower, father-in-law, Ag Lab, b. Tolpuddle). N.B. This is not same George Spicer as on 1861 above: this one was a widower aged 44 in Tolpuddle on 1861 census, with daughter Maria Oliver Spicer. There is a George (63) and Sarah (63) Spicer at a lodging house in Uxbridge: birthplaces not known. James Spicer (22, servant,U, b. Tolpudddle) is at a grocer's merchant in Battersea. 56

bullet  Events

• Marriage, 1 Jun 1837, Wimborne Minster, Dorset, England. 56,163 George Spicer witness at marriage, assumed to be younger brother.
Why they married in Wimborne Minster is somewhat of a mystery although there is a connection: William Pitt owned a house on Holt Green there in 1838 and there is the family of John (38) and Mary Jenkins Pitt (36) who lived on King Street in 1841 with a large family. Married in 1823 in Wimborne (Ancestry database)
Exactly who John was is not determined, but likely another son of William Pitt and thereby a brother of Sarah possibly. The Jenkins surname is curious since in the 1861 census of Charles Besant there is a William Jenkins, age 5, grandson, who remained with the family for several decades.
John Pitt was born in Ringwood, Hants, per the 1861 census. John and Mary are also on the 1851 census at the same place, but the children are slightly different.
