Family moved to Wisconsin in 1880 and Ernest attended school in Hammond, Wisconsin. He legally adopted his mother's maiden name on August 18, 1906 in Madison, Wisconsin claiming that the reason was Smith was too common a name and he was having trouble with his mail as result. The family story is that his wife to be thought it a too common name. The name was changed the week before he got married.

There is an extensive biography of Ernest in the National Cyclopaedia of American Biography.

During WWI he was a statistician for the US Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corp in 1918-19 and from that time until the end of his life he served as an advisory economist and statistician to various industries and governmental agencies. In 1930 he was named head of the Bureau of Business Research (later the Bernard Baruch School of Business) at the College of the City of New York, which post he held until he reached the mandatory retirement age of seventy in 1947. Thereafter he joined the faculty of Manhattan College, Bronx, New York until 1957. Author of many books and studies as well as a very active citizen in the public and civic affairs of his city of residence, New Rochelle, New York.
